Wheat
Wheat is our main crop. Waldersey grows over 20,000 tonnes a year – enough to produce 50 million loaves of bread. Harvest straw is baled and taken off the fields due to the high organic matter in the soil. This is then used for fuel for local power stations.
We have three John Deere combine harvesters harvesting at peak capacity of around 100 tonnes per hour. Grain is dried and stored on our farms, including retaining seed for planting the following year’s crop.
Potatoes
Waldersey produces enough potatoes to make 30 million portions of chips a year. Our potatoes are marketed under the Waldersey Chippers brand and sold around the UK.
We specialise in growing frying potatoes, and these include varieties Markies, Agria, Maris Piper and Sagita.
These are sorted for size, then stored and packed at our business headquarters at Northfield Farm. Waldersey has invested in top quality storage, using renewable energy to keep the potatoes at the optimum temperature so they are available for market all year round.
Onions
Waldersey grows 6,000 tonnes of onions every year. Our specialism is red onions, which suit our land because they respond well to its moisture-retentive qualities.
We harvest onions with our own equipment before they are air dried, cured and refrigerated in our temperature controlled farm stores.
Food Storage
Modern techniques to maximise freshness
With millions of tonnes of food produced every year on our farm, it is key that it is stored safely and securely so we can provide it in the best possible condition when it is needed.
Our onion storage covers around 1,800 square metres, and dries, hardens and conditions all our onions so that high quality produce is available all year round.
We also have our own specialist grain handling facility which dries, conditions and stores wheat for use in bread and biscuit making.
